Fishing charter brand identity
Jumeirah John runs fishing charters out of Dubai and he's good at what he does. Relaxed, knowledgeable, the kind of guide who makes a day on the water memorable whether you've been fishing for thirty years or never held a rod. What he didn't have was a brand that communicated any of that. Mike Rock Studio built him one, a complete identity system that works on a boat hull, an Instagram grid, and a printed brochure with equal confidence.
The Challenge:
Dubai's fishing charter market is more competitive than it looks. On the surface it's a leisure industry, early mornings, open water, the occasional trophy catch. Underneath, it's a market where most operators look identical: generic nautical clichés, inconsistent photography, nothing that sticks. For a charter business, where bookings live and die on trust and personality, that anonymity is a real commercial problem.
Jumeirah John had the personality. He had the reputation among the people who'd been out with him. What he lacked was any visual consistency: marketing materials that didn't speak to each other, no coherent identity, and nothing that communicated his approach to someone discovering him for the first time on Instagram or Google. The business needed a complete identity system built to attract both tourists and Dubai's community of serious local anglers.
The Approach:
The creative direction started with John himself, his laid-back confidence, his genuine passion for the craft, and the specific experience he offers: not a corporate charter operation, but a guide who knows these waters and makes the day worthwhile regardless of what you catch.
The logo concept came directly from that brief. John's initials - JJ - formed using stylised fishing hooks: a solution that is immediately legible, immediately relevant, and immediately his. The hook letterforms are clean enough to work at small scale on a business card and bold enough to read across the side of a boat. The references to fishing tackle and lures integrated throughout the system reward a second look without demanding one.
The environment shaped every other decision. A brand that lives in bright Gulf sunlight, on water, on screens, and in print needs a colour system that performs in all four contexts without compromise. Nautical blues anchored the palette, the specific shade of the Gulf at different times of day with sun-bleached orange drawn from early morning light and golden hour returns. Both colours hold up in harsh marine conditions and read cleanly on digital platforms.
Typography was chosen to mirror John's personality: rounded, approachable, welcoming to someone booking their first charter and credible to an experienced angler who knows what they're looking for.
The Work:
Logo System:
A JJ monogram built from stylised fishing hook letterforms, distinctive, scalable, and unmistakably connected to the charter experience. Integrated references to fishing tackle throughout the wider mark system.
Colour & Typography:
A palette of nautical blues and sun-bleached orange, selected for legibility in sunlight and on screen. Rounded, approachable typography that reflects John's personality without sacrificing credibility.
Brand Applications:
Business cards, social media templates, boat decals, and marketing collateral, every touchpoint considered as part of a consistent visual language. The identity performs equally well on a boat hull in the Gulf and an Instagram post at midnight.
Print & Digital:
A full suite of marketing materials designed for John's two primary channels: word of mouth supported by print, and social media discovery. Both built on the same visual system, both immediately recognisable as Jumeirah John.
The Outcome:
Jumeirah John now has a brand that does what a good charter guide does, it makes the right people feel immediately confident they're in good hands. The identity is distinctive in a market full of generic nautical branding, consistent across every surface it touches, and built to last through the kind of conditions the Gulf dishes out.
A fishing charter needs more than a boat. It needs a brand that hooks attention. This one does.
