Dubai Digital Media Streaming Brand Identity Hero

ARN Play is the official mobile application of the Arabian Radio Network, one of the Middle East's most established broadcast media groups, home to Tag 91.1, Dubai 92, and Virgin Radio Dubai. The brief was to create a brand identity for a product that didn't yet exist: a single digital hub bringing ARN's radio stations, music, news, and entertainment together in one place from Hollywood and Bollywood headlines to current affairs across the Arab world. Mike Rock Studio collaborated with the ARN team on-site to develop the brand, look, and feel from scratch, a friendly, approachable identity built to showcase the network's stations and services to best effect. The app is now live on both the Google Play and Apple App stores.

The Challenge

Designing a sub-brand for an established media group is a specific and demanding brief. The ARN Play identity needed to feel like a natural extension of the ARN family, coherent with the parent brand and its stable of well-known stations while establishing its own distinct visual personality as a digital product. Get the balance wrong in either direction and the brand either disappears into the parent or creates confusion about what it is and who it's for.

The product itself added another layer of complexity. ARN Play isn't simply a radio app, it's a content platform combining live streaming, news, and interactive features for an audience that consumes media across multiple devices and contexts throughout the day. The identity needed to communicate energy, immediacy, and ease of access without losing the broadcast credibility that the ARN name carries.

Dubai's digital media market is mature and discerning. The audience for ARN Play - listeners of Tag 91.1, Dubai 92, and Virgin Radio Dubai, already have a relationship with these stations and an expectation of quality. The brand needed to honour that relationship while signalling something new.

The Approach

The strategic foundation was the word Play itself. In the context of media and streaming, play is a command, the universal symbol of content beginning, of something starting. It carries immediacy, optimism, and a directness that aligned precisely with what ARN Play needed to communicate: this is where you go when you want to hear something worth listening to.

Working on-site with the ARN team shaped the direction as much as any brief could. The collaboration surfaced a clear creative instinct: ARN Play needed to feel friendly and approachable rather than corporate: a brand that matched the easy, personable energy of the radio presenters and content it represents, not the institutional weight of the broadcast group behind it. Hollywood and Bollywood gossip, Arab world entertainment, and current affairs all needed to feel at home under the same warm, accessible identity.

The visual direction was built around that energy. A brand identity for a streaming platform needs to work at the scale of an app icon on a phone screen and at the scale of out-of-home advertising across Dubai. It needs to feel at home in the digital environment of a mobile application and consistent with the broadcast heritage of a regional media leader while remaining warm enough that a listener feels like they're tuning in to a friend, not a corporation. Every typographic, colour, and compositional decision was made in service of that dual context.

The guidelines were developed with the product team in mind, a comprehensive system that would enable ARN's internal team to apply the identity consistently across every touchpoint as the platform grew, without requiring external creative input for every execution.

The Outcome

ARN Play launched with a brand identity that positions it clearly within the ARN family while establishing its own presence as a digital product. The identity communicates the energy, warmth, and immediacy of a streaming platform alongside the credibility of one of the Middle East's most recognised broadcast media groups, a combination that the Dubai market, with its sophisticated media-literate audience, was well placed to appreciate. The app is now live and available to download on both the Google Play and Apple App stores, bringing ARN's stations, music, and entertainment content to listeners across the region in one friendly, approachable place.

Project FAQ

How do you create a sub-brand identity for an established media group?

The central challenge is balance. A sub-brand needs to feel coherent with its parent sharing enough visual DNA that the connection is clear while establishing a distinct enough identity to function as its own product in the market. Lean too far toward the parent and the sub-brand lacks presence; too far away and it creates confusion. For ARN Play, the solution was to honour the broadcast credibility of the Arabian Radio Network while building a visual language with the energy and immediacy of a digital-first streaming product. Every decision was made in service of that balance.

What does a brand identity for a mobile app include?

A mobile app brand identity covers the logomark and app icon which need to work at very small scale in a crowded app store environment — along with the typography, colour system, and visual language that carries the brand across the application interface, marketing materials, social media, and any out-of-home or broadcast advertising. For a platform like ARN Play, the identity also needed to work consistently across multiple stations and content types without losing coherence. Comprehensive brand guidelines are essential to ensure that consistency is maintained as the product scales.

How do you brand a streaming platform for a Middle East audience?

The UAE and wider GCC market is one of the most digitally engaged audiences in the world, with very high smartphone penetration and sophisticated expectations of digital product quality. A streaming platform brand in this market needs to communicate immediacy and energy, qualities that drive download and regular use alongside the credibility that comes from being associated with established, trusted broadcast brands. The visual identity needs to perform equally well in Arabic and English contexts, and at every scale from a phone screen to a highway billboard.
